Inequality and the Poverty of Democracy

Are economic inequalities self-perpetuating through political channels? This lecture focuses on the relationship between different aspects of economic inequality and the functioning and survival of democracies around the world.  It focuses on three themes: (1) how inequality, in particular its spatial dimension, conditions the institutional architecture of democracies and their ability to redistribute; (2) the link between economic and political inequality; and (3) finally, the extent to which inequality undermines democracy itself in the current
context of polarization and backsliding.
